Welcome to Computing Science

The development of computing over the last few decades has been significant in terms of speed and scope. It has had an effect on all aspects of our lives, and its future course remains unpredictable. It encompasses a very wide field of study, merging at its boundaries with many other disciplines. It provides us with many increasingly powerful hardware and software tools. Our society requires more and more individuals who have the skills to use these tools, who understand how they work, and who have the ability to develop new and improved tools.

Computing is not only about learning to use current hardware and software. It is designed to provide students with both the necessary knowledge and understanding and the practical problem solving skills to enable them to become the ICT tool designers of the future.

Senior Phase

National 5 Computing Science

This course develops knowledge and understanding of key concepts and processes in Computing Science, enabling pupils to apply skills and knowledge in developing digital solutions.  Pupils communicate computing concepts and explain computational behaviour clearly and concisely using appropriate terminology, and develop an understanding of the role and impact of Computing Science in changing and influencing our environment and society.

Higher Computing Science

The Higher Computing Science Course introduces learners to an advanced range of computational processes and thinking, and develops a rigorous approach to the design and development process across a variety of contemporary contexts. Learners gain an awareness of the importance that computing professionals play in meeting the needs of society today and for the future, in fields which include science, education, business and industry.

Games Design

The NPAs in Computer Games Development at SCQF levels 4, 5 and 6 introduce learners to the genres, trends and emerging technologies of the computer games industry. These awards provides a foundation in techniques that are important to the sector, such as digital planning and design, creation of media assets, and development and testing — while also developing employability skills and Core Skills through enterprise activities.

This qualification covers core areas such as design, media assets and development. Coding is also an important part of this qualification. The award will improve learners’ computational thinking skills — an area that is gaining recognition as a vital 21st century competence — and stimulate interest in computer science among young learners.
