The Transitional Bid

Outward BoundThe Transformational Bid has focussed on motivation, learning, ambition, support, parental involvement, the use of I.C.T. and staff development. The activities undertaken by the school were as follows:

  1. Introducing the Learn 2 Learn course from Alite Training, developed by Alistair Smith, for S1/S2 and S5/S6 pupils. This is taken from Cramlington Community High School (just outside Newcastle-upon-Tyne).
  2. Setting up a Support Class for S1 pupils in order to help vulnerable pupils become ready for Secondary School.
  3. Introducing various study opportunities for S4/S5/S6 pupils; in particular, a study week in Blairvadach for revision during the Easter break, and a Maths Study Weekend. These study opportunities are very well received by pupils and staff.
  4. The School Library is kept open late on 3 nights per week from September to Easter allowing pupils to have a supervised place of study.
  5. All classrooms now have L.C.D. projectors, allowing teachers to use I.C.T. in every lesson.
  6. Some development work has been carried out using the Virtual Learning Environment from Strathclyde University.
  7. Parental involvement in the school has increased due to changes in the way staff report to parents and the setting up of the School’s Parent Council.
  8. All staff have been trained in teaching methods using the 4-stage cycle. This is now our school policy.
  9. Residential courses for S1-S6. All S1 have an opportunity to attend an Outward Bound residential course at Loch Eil. These activities are all part of the plan to transform Springburn Academy pupils into successful individuals, independent learners, and effective contributors.
