News Letter 6 2015

Dear Parents/ Carers,

As 2015 nears its end it is my pleasure to tell you of the great things that have happened this term and of some that are still to come.

First Aid Awards 2015

It was my delight on 4th of December to attend the First Aid awards ceremony at the Glasgow City Hotel, as Springburn Academy was nominated for the First Class Award due to a number of our current S4 pupils being trained in first aid last year.  Some of these pupils have gone on to train further and have been involved in facilitating first aid training for S1 and S2 pupils an excellent example of being responsible citizens.  Unfortunately we were not successful in winning the award but all of our young people are a credit to the school and are committed to continuing their first aid training.

Earlier on in the term three of our first aiders NAMES… were invited to a special ceremony where they met the patron of First Aid the Princess Royal Princess Anne and demonstrated some of their CPR skills to her.

Political Literacy

On Wednesday 9th December Kezia Dugdale, Alan Johnston and Cathleen Stihler of the Labour party came in to meet our senior Modern Studies pupils and answered their very searching questions.  It was an excellent opportunity for our young people to engage in political discussion.  Thanks to Miss Ashley and Mr McAvoy for their hard work preparing the pupils.

World Book Day

Advanced Higher English pupils worked with the English department to make a fun afternoon for S1 pupils, full of their favourite literary characters some of whom came to life.

World of Work

Our S3/4 pupils have been fortunate to meet with some of our business partners through assemblies and workshops to help them know and understand the different skills they may need to develop to make them ready for the workplace.  The school are currently in negotiation with our business partner Luddon Ltd and Kelvin College to develop a new option for senior pupils interested in moving onto apprenticeships after school.

Christmas Concert

At the beginning of December a wonderful Christmas concert took place in the school with pupils who had 3 months to 6 years’ experience in playing their instruments, featuring strings for the first time ever.  The cabaret atmosphere was delightful and festive, the acts were fantastic with individual and group talent celebrated.  On the evening a raffle raised money for the school to purchase another violin or two.  A huge thank you to Ms Valentine and the music instructors for creating such a magical evening.

More to come…

On Monday the annual Christmas Fayre will take place thanks to S6 captains Marissa McLaren and Kirsten Hall who have organised the event.  It will take place between 10 am and 12 noon and all pupils will be able to visit the stalls and get a last minute gift or two.  Half of the profits from the stalls will be donated to school funds.

Monday afternoon will see Springburn’s Got Talent take to the stage organised by Ms Sturrock’s form class as part of their micr-tyco challenge.

On Tuesday there will be a Christmas Assembly before and early lunchtime at 12.30pm. School closes at 2.30pm.

I hope you all have a peaceful and happy winter break.  Pupils return to school on Wednesday 6th January 2016 @ 8.50am.

Happy Holidays
