Headteacher’s Letter 3 October 2015

Dear Parents/ Carers,

As the October break is upon us it is my pleasure to send you this letter telling you about the great things that have happened this term.

S4 Parental Seminar

Many thanks to all of the parents who turned out for the S4 seminar and received invaluable information regarding supporting their children in their first year of SQA exams.  Ms Watt collected many parental email addresses to send information electronically, if you wish to receive information in this way please send your email details to:

Wider Achievement

This term pupils have had many opportunities to experience learning outside the school building.  These include:

S2 pupils graduating from the Children’s University, some very proud parents too!  S2/3 pupils participated in the Greener Glasgow Art Competition- some even won prizes. S3 pupils have been working with Maryhill Fire Station in their Fire Reach programme and have thoroughly enjoyed their experience and been a credit to the school. S1 pupils have just returned from an Outward Bound trip to Loch Eil.  Some S2 pupils attended the trip as mentors and had the opportunity to demonstrate and develop their leadership skills. Sports Ambassadors have been to an event where they met Steve Frew, Olympic athlete.  30 of our S3 pupils have begun working towards achieving a bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. S1 (and S6 helpers) participate in a lunchtime “chat ’n’ chill” club in the library.  S4 pupils have achieved their first aid award with St Andrew’s Ambulance.  Design technology students have been at seminars with world renowned architects and engineers.  Our Culinary Excellence students have started their work in Brian Maule’s restaurant in Glasgow City Centre.  Royston Youth Action have been delivering assemblies in school this week to highlight Hate Crime Awareness week (12 – 16th October) and have been working with a group of S3/4 pupils to achieve a Dynamic Youth Award.

Pupil Council

The school has been successful in gaining funding of £5000 from the Access to Education Funding Grant.  The funding has been granted to facilitate outdoor education and social spaces for pupils.  The pupil council will be discussing how to use the money at the next whole school council meeting on 21st October.  At this meeting pupils will meet with the Fuel Zone catering manager Mary Campbell to discuss different food options for lunchtimes.

New DHT

Yesterday Mr Kevin Rae from Bo’ness Academy in Falkirk was appointed DHT at Springburn Academy.  We look forward to him joining the senior leadership team on 16th Novemebr.  Mr Richard Porter from the Parent Council was the parent representative on the interview panel.  Parents’ views are crucial in appointing new leaders to the school.  If you are interested in joining the Parent Council please come along to our next meeting on 17th November at 6.30pm in the school, or contact the school for further details.

Dates for your diary
